AstroPan
Panning Web Page Generator V 0.1.1Beta
AstroPan is a web page generator designed to enable more convenient viewing of large images on the Internet.

The generated page uses directional panning controls to move a targeting reticle over a map while displaying the full sized image in another window.

Panning Speeds are adjustable from the web page from very slow and smooth to instant.

AstroPan ScreenShot All you need to start with is the full-sized image you want to display and the AstroPan software.

Create the layout with AstroPan and then generate the web page and view or upload it immediately.

About AstroPan

Current Version : 0.2.1 Beta - 8th-February 2005

AstroPan is an Interactive Image Panning Web Page Generator born from a need to display

images online that are too large for the average screen resolution without affecting the image quality.

Although Panning software is not new, the majority of existing products do not cater well with panning large images and they do not have adjustable Panning speeds.

The solution to dealing with large images is usually to provide a  Zoom-In facility, however zooming-in on a small image destroys the resolution and clarity by simply magnifying the individual pixels.

AstroPan's aim is to allow efficient panning of full-resolution images. This eliminates the need to Zoom-In on a small image therefore maintaining the full-resolution and clarity of the original image while still allowing the full scale image to be seen in the map window.

In a nutshell, the aim of AstroPan is to allow a full-resolution image to be panned in a window with the map as a guide.

AstroPan Features

Generates web pages for large images to be panned by control pad and map mouse-click.

Navigation is provided by standard panning controls as well as direct map-click with adjustable speeds

from a smooth pan to instantaneous.

Works with images up to 32767 x 32767 pixels (One GigaPixel)

Saves layouts as an APL (AstroPan Layout) file, which can be reloaded for further modification.

Allows optional borders with selectable  style, thickness and color.

Pure text or HTML can be typed directly into variable-sized Rich-Text boxes for flexible text formatting.

Layouts can be reloaded and modified at any time.

As well as the creating the layout, AstroPan generates a map of customisable size and
adds a reticle overlay to it which shows the area currently displayed in the zoom window.

AstroPan produces fully functional HTML 4.01-compliant web pages,

with only a single full-resolution image as the starting point.

Zoom - Although AstroPan's aim is to allow access to a full-resolution image, the ability to zoom out is desirable.

The problem is that web-based panning applications that allow zoom-out get very slow when panning due to the increased number of pixels that need to be moved when zoomed-out. A more efficient zoom-out method is being worked on to allow efficient panning when zoomed out.

Most existing panning software only allow you to zoom-in because of this issue. Zooming-in only magnifies pixels and ruins resolution, which is what AstroPan was designed to avoid.

Multiple Control Panels - Selectable vertical and horizontal control panels of different sizes are being designed to allow a more customisable web interface.

These features are planned for AstroPan V2.0 which will be available as an upgrade to registered AstroPan V1.0 owners.
